Opening Day of Competition Wraps At Boardmasters

Bouchgua, Dos Santos, Barton and Zebrowski Stand Out in Opening Rounds Next Call, Thursday, August 8 at 07:30 a.m. BST

FISTRAL BEACH, Cornwall - England (Wednesday, August 7, 2024) – The 2024 Boardmasters Open got underway today with the start of the BYD Pro World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) 1,000 at Fistral Beach. It was testing conditions, with three-to-four foot surf in strong offshore wind, but the waves held up to complete the first two rounds of the men's competition as well as the women's Opening Round.

Stand out performances included Morocco's Teva Bouchgua who burst out the gates with a total of 15.00 (out of a possible 20) to comfortably book his spot in the Round of 32. Dylan Donegan Dos Santos (ESP) scored the first excellent wave of the day in his Round of 64 heat, an 8.00 point ride (out of a possible 10) and a 6.37 for a total of 14.37 to take the win ahead of the Basque Country's Adur Amatriain.

It was a tough day for the British surfers, with only 8 men advancing to the Round of 32. The top performers included Lukas Skinner (GBR) and Arran Strong (GBR) who won their respective heats and get to surf another day.

In the women's Opening Round, last year's runner-up Alys Barton (GBR) showed her form with a heat total of 15.03 to win ahead of Daniela Boldini (ITA) and advance to the Round of 16. Joining Barton are fellow British surfers Tegan Blackford and Charlotte Mulley. 

Annette Gonzalez Etxabarri (EUK) and Janina Zeitler (GER) went wave-for-wave in their heat, with both surfers earning a total of 14.00 to book their spot in the next round. In the final heat of the day, Tya Zebrowski (FRA) locked in the highest heat total of the day with two excellent scoring rides, an 8.60 and 8.17 for a total of 16.77. 

The next call will be on Thursday, August 8 at 07:30 a.m. BST for a possible 08:00 a.m. start to the Wild West Jerky Longboard Pro.
